Our History
Our story begins in 1817 with the construction of the Erie Canal, from this point on Rome became a town of transportation. But it was in 1842 with construction of the Watertown & Rome Railroad that the sound of a steam whistle would echo through the area. With technology eventually replacing the old steam locomotives a small demostration railroad was constructed near the Ft. Bull historic site.
This demonstration railroad operated off and on until finally closing in 2009.
In 2024 two individuals teamed together in partnership with the Erie Canal Village to bring back the "Little railraod of Rome." With the intent of railroad preservation and historical representation at the forefront, we hope that the Mohawk Valley Heritage Railroad will inspire the next generation with steam technology and railroad lore.
So come and visit us, the Mohawk Valley Heritage Railroad!
